Photographer Fred Shanholtzer, PhD

Biographical Information

Fred Shanholtzer has a M.S. Degree in Zoology from Florida State University and a Ph.D. Degree in Zoology from the University of Georgia.

He considers himself to be first a biologist who takes wildlife pictures, rather than a photographer that takes photographs of biological subjects. He has had a deep interest in ornithology for over 40 years. Dr. Shanholtzer has conducted wildlife photography workshops for the Southeastern Center for the Photographic Arts in Atlanta and for the Hobe Sound Nature Center in South Florida. He has had a month-long exhibit of his work at a major library in Martin County, Florida.

He has conducted natural history courses covering coastal Georgia. Most of his professional career has taken place in the Southeastern United States and most of this work has involved wetland restoration and wildlife habitat development.

Fred Shanholtzer has taken photographs of wildlife species throughout the United States from the Dry Tortugas to the Pacific Northwest. His most recent photography trip was to Trinidad.

At some time in the near future, he will modify this web site into a wading bird series, series on birds of prey, and Trinidad birds.

He uses Canon digital camera equipment with a variety of lenses ranging up to 500mm f4.5.
